Temporary Roadway Panel

A large-format temporary roadway mat — a composite/HDPE panel for instant heavy-duty access roads that minimises joints per metre of road. Overlapping flanges and a heavy locking-pin system give a rigid, high-PSI driving surface installed by forklift.

Instant heavy roads with fewer joints

These temporary access road mats — roughly 2×4 m, about 8 m² a panel — are how you build a portable roadway fast with the fewest joints per metre. Fewer joints means a flatter, more rigid driving surface and quicker installation, because there are simply fewer pieces to lay and lock over a given length of road.

A rigid, high-bearing surface

The composite/HDPE panel is engineered for a high-PSI driving surface — around 828 psi bearing — so it carries the heaviest plant and constant truck traffic without flexing into ruts. Overlapping flanges and a heavy locking-pin system tie the panels into a continuous slab rather than a row of loose boards.

Installed by forklift

At about 385 kg a panel, this is a forklift or telehandler install, not a hand lay. That is the trade: you give up two-person portability and get a road that goes down quickly and stands up to sustained heavy use — the right call for a site entrance road or a crane standing platform that has to last the project.

Where panels beat mats

Reach for these temporary ground protection mats — also sold as trackway matting — over a hand-portable interlocking access mat when the road is long, the traffic is heavy and continuous, and you have plant on site to place them: site entrance roads, crane standing and working platforms, and delivery routes that must take articulated trucks — see a temporary roadway over soft ground in practice.

Quoted load figures assume a competent, evenly prepared sub-grade. A mat spreads and distributes load — it does not turn soft ground into hard standing — so size to ground bearing pressure (load ÷ contact area).

Frequently asked questions

How is a temporary roadway panel installed?

At about 385 kg per 2×4 m panel, this is a forklift or telehandler install, not a hand lay. Overlapping flanges and a heavy locking-pin system tie panels into a continuous, rigid slab rated to around 828 psi bearing, so it goes down fast and stands up to constant heavy plant and truck traffic.

Why use large panels instead of smaller interlocking mats for a temporary road?

Fewer joints per metre. Each panel covers about 8 m², so a given length of road needs far fewer pieces to lay and lock, giving a flatter, more rigid driving surface installed faster. Choose panels over hand-portable mats when the road is long, traffic is heavy and continuous, and plant is already on site to place them.
