Turf Reinforcement Grid

An open-cell HDPE grid — also called ground reinforcement mats — that sits flush in grass to create a permeable, load-bearing surface where roots grow up through roughly 95% void infill. It distributes wheel loads to the sub-base while preventing rutting and soil compaction.

Permanent grass protection matting that disappears

A turf reinforcement grid is the permanent answer where temporary mats are not. The open-cell HDPE panel sits flush in the soil and is backfilled with topsoil, so grass roots grow up through roughly 95% void. Within a season the surface looks like ordinary lawn but carries vehicles — load-bearing grass protection matting you cannot see (see protecting turf and landscaping with ground mats).

How the grid carries load

The cellular structure spreads wheel loads down to the sub-base instead of letting tyres punch into wet soil. Filled and rooted, a 500×500 mm panel system carries on the order of 100–150 t/m² and handles point loads to about 25 t, so an overflow car park or a fire lane stays firm and rut-free through a wet weekend without turning to mud.

Drainage and a green finish

Because the grid is fully permeable, rain soaks straight through to the ground rather than sheeting off — no surface runoff, no standing water, and none of the drainage paperwork a paved area triggers. The peg-and-socket interlock locks panels into a continuous deck during install, then vanishes under the grass.

Where it fits

Overflow and grass parking, emergency and fire-access lanes, and reinforced driveways and verges that must stay green but take occasional traffic. For a gravel-filled finish or a deeper cell, the gravel grid carries the same loads with stone infill; for short events where you lay and lift the same week, the clear turf protection mat is the better tool. The grid is for surfaces that stay put for years.

Quoted load figures assume a competent, evenly prepared sub-grade. A mat spreads and distributes load — it does not turn soft ground into hard standing — so size to ground bearing pressure (load ÷ contact area).

Frequently asked questions

How much weight does a turf reinforcement grid carry once grass grows through?

Filled and rooted, a ~500×500 mm panel system carries on the order of 100–150 t/m², with point loads to about 25 t — enough for overflow car parks, fire-access lanes, and reinforced driveways to stay firm through a wet weekend. The open-cell HDPE panel spreads wheel loads to the sub-base while roughly 95% void lets grass roots grow through.

Does a turf reinforcement grid stay visible once installed?

No. The panel sits flush in the soil and is backfilled with topsoil and grass seed, so within a season the surface looks like ordinary lawn while carrying vehicles underneath. It is fully permeable, so rain drains straight through with no surface runoff — unlike a paved surface, it triggers none of the usual drainage requirements.
