A Temporary Site Road for Concrete and Material Trucks

Ground protection mats gave a mid-rise building site a stable haul road from the gate to the pour, keeping concrete mixer trucks moving through a wet spring.
Raw ground at the gate
On a mid-rise commercial building site in northern China, the ground between the site entrance and the building footprint was graded but not paved. The exposed red clay turns to mud under wheel traffic after rain, and that stretch sees daily trips from concrete mixer trucks, material deliveries, and an excavator working around the foundation formwork. A wet spring meant the site was dealing with fresh rain most weeks, never quite drying out enough to firm the clay back up on its own.
The cost of a stuck truck
Concrete has a limited working time after batching, so a mixer truck bogged down on the way to the pour risks the load starting to set before it can be placed and having to be rejected outright. Beyond the wasted load, repeated regrading of the haul route after every rain was eating into both the schedule and the site budget, and the site superintendent had already turned away one mixer truck that could not get close enough to the pour to unload safely.
Matching mat to traffic
The stretch nearest the gate, where mixer trucks turn and queue before reversing to the pour, carried the interlocking temporary roadway panel for its higher rating under a stationary loaded truck. Further in, where the route saw mostly wheelbarrows, a skid steer, and lighter delivery vans, the site used the lighter standard mat, which two labourers could reposition by hand without waiting for a forklift or crane to be free.
A haul road without paving
The site team laid the panels along roughly 250 metres of route from the gate to the pour area, working around the existing formwork and rebar stockpiles rather than clearing them first. The interlocking connectors spread wheel loads across the compacted subgrade and kept the panels from creeping apart under repeated truck turns, and the road was shifted lane by lane as the building progressed and the pour location moved.
Result
The site kept concrete deliveries on schedule through the wettest weeks of spring with no mixer truck stuck on the way to a pour, and the superintendent stopped needing to check the forecast before booking a pour. Once the permanent site road was paved, the mats came straight up and were redeployed to a material laydown area elsewhere on site instead of being scrapped with the rest of the temporary works.
